Jan Cook

Jan is a fine art and commercial photographer, originally from Seattle but currently based in Portland, Oregon. GALLERY 1/1 is pleased to present her series of silver gelatin photograms of light bulbs entitled Bright Ideas. Jan gives her photograms a unique luminance with the addition of an alternative darkroom process called "chromoskedasic painting." She hand works the black and white print with chemicals, giving it a colorful glow by altering how the silver particles reflect light. Manipulating photographs allows Jan to work with several elements that are interesting to her, making marks on paper, altering a photographic image and integrating another medium into the surface of the print. Visually, she is interested in pushing the boundary between where the photographic image begins and ends. This process is not commonly used and it is a rare treat to see such prints in person.
